September 2018

Following the success of Gareth's first opera, Wythnos yng Nghymru Fydd, work is now in progress on a second - an adaptation of Caradog Prichard's classic Un Nos Ola Leuad, one of the very few Welsh-language novels to be translated into multiple languages. The plans are for OPRA Cymru to perform the opera in 2020. Watch this space!

Reviewers gave high praise to the recent chamber work To the Four Winds as played by Ensemble Cymru in their 15th anniversary tour.  A sample: "A wonderfully dramatic piece...a stunning piece, full of life and a wonderful showcase for all the players of Ensemble Cymru. A new piece by Gareth, Cytgerdd, received its first performances on 6 April in the International Harp Festival in Caernarfon. It's the test piece for the most advanced harpists, and was composed to celebrate the 90th birthday of the harpist Osian Ellis.

Gareth composed a nonet, To the Four Winds, for Ensemble Cymru's 15th anniversary tour in May 2018, with performances on 4/5 (Chapter, Cardiff), 6/5 (Arts Centre, Aberystwyth), 7/5 (Neuadd Dwyfor, Pwllheli), 8/5 (Gad Chapel, Cilcain), 10-12/5 (Venue Cymru, Llandudno),12/5 (Ucheldre, Holyhead), 13/5 (Pontio, Bangor) and 14/5 (Galeri, Caernarfon). The four movements portray the winds of Greek mythology: Notos, Euros, Zephyros and Boreas.

Gareth's opera, Wythnos yng Nghymru Fydd, won the award for Best Production in the Welsh Language in the Wales Theatre Awards 2018.  Additionally, it had reached the shortlist in a further three categories: Best Sound (i.e. music), Best Male Performance in Opera (Robin Lyn) and Best Touring Production in the Welsh Language.

Gareth Glyn's new opera, Wythnos yng Nghymru Fydd (A week in a Future Wales) received its first ever performances on 10 and 11 November in the Pontio centre, Bangor before going on tour to Rosllannerchrugog (14/11), Newtown (16/11), Aberystwyth (17/11), Barry (21/11), Swansea (23/11) and Pwllheli (25/11). The libretto is an adaptation by Mererid Hopwood of Islwyn Ffowc Elis's iconic novel published 60 years ago. More details here.

February - Since the orchestral commissioned work ‘Gododdin’ received its world première in the North Wales International Music Festival in 2014, in a performance by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, it has so far been broadcast three times on different dates, and on different BBC stations – Radio 3, Radio Wales and Radio Cymru.

September - Gareth’s latest orchestral commission work, ‘Gododdin’, received its world première in a performance given by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales in the North Wales International Music Festival on 27 September.

July - Gareth’s work for symphony orchestra and actors, ‘The Mission of SPM-1’ was performed in the International Eisteddfod at Llangollen by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, before an audience of at least three thousand children from many parts of Wales and beyond.


June - Gareth has begun work on a Welsh opera. His intention is to create a work based on one of the 20th century’s most important novel in the language, ‘Wythnos yng Nghymru Fydd’ (A Week in a Future Wales) by Islwyn Ffowc Elis. Come back to this webpage to follow developments as they happen.


May - A capacity crowd of thousands filled Trafalgar Square in London for an open-air concert given by the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Valery Gergiev, including a performance of Gareth’s special arrangement of Berlioz’s ‘Symphonie Fantastique’ which incorporates young players into the ensemble.

July - Gareth Glyn was accorded the privilege of being invited to make the special arrangement of ‘Nimrod’ by Elgar used in the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games in London on 27 July, so that 80 children, aged between 7 and 17, were able to perform side by side with members of the LSO to a worldwide audience of an estimated billion or more.
